CAPB recently brought Town staff and South End condominium representatives together at the Meridian to address two longstanding concerns: the deteriorating Reach 8 sidewalk and hazardous conditions along portions of the Reach 8 beach.
The group reviewed extensive photographs documenting both areas, providing a clear picture of the conditions and an opportunity to clarify the responsibilities of the Town, state, FDOT and private property owners.
On the beach, photographs showed significant escarpments as well as exposed concrete, steel, asphalt and other debris that have raised safety concerns. The discussion clarified that areas below the mean high-water line fall under state jurisdiction, while areas above may involve private property owners. These jurisdictional and permitting issues require coordination among the appropriate parties.
The Reach 8 sidewalk presents a different challenge. South Ocean Boulevard is a state road, and FDOT controls the right-of-way. CAPB and the Town will continue working with FDOT to advance the issue. CAPB’s objective is a safe, durable Reach 8 sidewalk consistent with the recently completed concrete improvements in Reach 7.
Across both issues, CAPB’s priority is clear: protecting public safety while pursuing durable solutions that address the underlying conditions.
Following the meeting, CAPB briefed Councilman Lew Crampton on the findings and priorities. Councilman Crampton expressed his support for addressing these concerns and continuing the effort to move them forward.
CAPB will continue advocating for action, working constructively with Town officials and the appropriate state agencies, and keeping South End residents informed as progress is made.
